Sometimes known as a hormonal IUD (Inter Uterine Device), is a small device that is fitted into the uterus. It prevents pregnancy by a small gradual release of progestogen hormone directly into the uterus and prevents sperm getting through to meet an egg. This device is safely inserted into the uterus under sterile conditions within the clinic with little discomfort or pain. The implanon© ( often referred to as the Rod) is a thin, flexible rod about the size of a matchstick which contains the hormone progestogen. This hormone that is released blocks ovulation ( the release of eggs from the ovaries). The implant is inserted by one of our many trained professionals under a local Anaesthetic into the under side of the arm and can be left for up to 3 yrs, but can be easily removed if you decide you no longer want or need it. This contraceptive injection releases hormones that provide a longer acting form of protection from unplanned pregnancy. It works by slowly releasing the hormone Progestogen into the body to prevent ovulation. This injection is required on time every 12 weeks otherwise it becomes ineffective. Some patients report irregular bleeding as a side effect.
